Optical Society of America
The OSA
web site is a source of news about optics of all types, plus information
on conferences and meetings. They also maintain the Optics InfoBase,
a searchable data base containing the content, in electronic form, of the
many journals they publish. Student memberships are very reasonable.
IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society
LEOS
is the society within the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
most directly connected with lasers and photonics. Its publications and
meetings have a strong emphasis on photonics devices, especially semiconductor
devices. There are links here to the main LEOS journals in electronic form,
or you can (because of the Rice subscription) search almost all IEEE journals
at IEEE
Xplore. The main IEEE
web site has a lot of information about other areas of electrical engineering,
including student services. You can become a student
member of IEEE online.
Rice IEEE Student Section
Rice has its own student IEEE section and web
site. Check it out for events (many with refreshments).
Light Reading
Light
Reading is a web site with timely news about the optical communications
industry. In addition to news, there are some good tutorial articles, analysis
of companies and products, profiles of the movers and shakers, and job listings.
