Thompson Reuters published its 2014 Highly Cited Researchers list, representing some of the world's leading scientific minds - and it includes ECE Faculty Members Richard G. Baraniuk and Naomi J. Halas, as well as joint-faculty member Peter Norlander. This list identifies the top 1% of researchers in 21 academic fields. Baraniuk was honored for his work in Engineering, Halas and Norlander for their work in Chemistry.
"It is wonderful for our faculty to be recognized this way - it shows the global impact of their research," said ECE department chair Behnaam Aazhang, who received the honor in 2001. "The School of Engineering at Rice as a whole had many researchers recognized by Thompson Reuters in both 2001 and 2014, and this shows our continued, broad and significant impact in research," he continued.
The recognition comes after Thompson Reuters analyzed over 113,000 Highly Cited Papers collected over 10 years using Essential Science Indicators. Each of these papers ranked in the top 1% by total citations according to field assignment and year of publication. The researchers honored this year rank among the top 1% most cited for their subject field and year of publication, earning them the mark of exceptional impact. A total of 14 Rice researchers were named to the 2014 list, 6 of them having an affiliation with the school of engineering, a growth from 9 Rice researchers overall and 4 with engineering affiliation in 2001.
