Paul Rodriguez (ECE senior) was part of a team of Rice students representing the Rice Student Chapter of Association of Latin American Engineers and Scientists (ALAES) at the academic Olympiad competion run by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). The competion consists of science and engineering questions in written and Jeopardy style rounds. Rice has a tradition of sending a team consisting of three seniors to compete and this years team was able to win the regional competition and advance to place second in the national competition.

In addition, the Rice chapter was also selected as the recipient of the national small chapter of the year award at the conference. Chapter of the year awards are given out to only three (small, medium and large ) chapters each year out of the many SHPE chapters nationwide.
