Mahesh K. Varanasi received his M.S.E.E., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical  Engineering from Rice University in 1987 and 1989, respectively. He joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1989.  Promoted to Associate Professor in 1996, Dr. Varanasi became a full professor in 2001. 
 
His research and teaching interests are in the areas of communication and information theory, wireless communication and coding, detection and estimation theory, and signal processing.  He has published on a variety of topics in these fields and is a Highly Cited Researcher in the "Computer Science" category according to the ISI Web of Science.
 
In November 2009, Dr. Varanasi was elevated to Fellow of the IEEE "for contributions to multi-user and wireless communications theory."
