Graduate Application Requirements and Overview

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers the following graduate programs:  

PhD – Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical and Computer Engineering: A doctoral thesis research program for which financial support is available. Those accepted with bachelor’s degrees will need to achieve a thesis master’s degree within the program before continuing on to PhD.

A stand-alone thesis MS degree program is NOT offered.

MEE – Master of Electrical Engineering: A non-thesis master’s program consisting of coursework.  Financial support is not available in this program.

MBA/MEE – Master of Business Administration & Master of Electrical Engineering: a joint program to which applications should be submitted through the Jones Graduate School of Management http://business.rice.edu/MBAPrograms.aspx?id=987

Application deadlines:
October 15 for spring start (MEE only, no PhD spring admissions)
January 15 for fall start

The new online graduate application system is available at https://ecegradapps.rice.edu

When applying, please do NOT mail any hard copy documents. Transcripts should be uploaded in the online application. Recommenders should submit letters online. Official transcripts will be requested only upon admission to program.
Application fee is $70. Notification of acceptance for fall admission is usually made by April 15.


In the selection of prospective graduate students in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, all available material is carefully evaluated, particularly:
   1. the scholastic record as reflected by courses chosen and the quality of performance
   2. the evaluations of teachers and advisors
   3. scores on the GRE
   4. the student's own statement of goals, aspirations and special interests

Minimum GPA requirement is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
GPA, GRE and TOEFL scores, applicants are advised that the average scores of successful applicants who were offered admission by our department in the past 3 years were as follows:

GRE: V600, Q770
TOEFL: paper-based test 600, computer-based test 250, iBT 90.

The TOEFL requirement is waived for students who have received a degree from a university where English is the official language of communication.

Please request ETS to report the GRE score using Institution Code 6609, Department Code 1203.
TOEFL score Department Code is 66.
