New ECE Graduate Student Welcome

Welcome to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, spring semester 2010! Our goal is to ensure that you have the tools and know the procedures necessary to successfully earn your graduate degree at Rice. We hope that you will enjoy your time here with us as well. If there is anything we can do to assist you, please let us know. We will be happy to help.

Rice University and ECE Department Procedures:
• You must complete and submit the required Health Data form (pdf).  You will not be able to register until Health Services receives it.

• International students need to make an appointment with OISS upon arrival, ext. 6095.

• If you are to receive a stipend (PhD only), you must complete W4 and I-9 Forms. (Please note on the back pages of the I-9 Form the types of identification that will be required.) Both the W4 and the I-9 Forms should be submitted to Payroll, Human Resources, Suite 2600, 6400 Fannin St., as soon as possible in order for you to be paid your first stipend check on January 15. Your first payroll check will be generated as a paper check and will be available in your department mailbox. Thereafter, your checks can be automatically deposited into your local bank account.

• Take your Rice ID authorization card from HR to the Campus Police station (Bldg. 51 @ Entrance 8, off University Blvd).  If you require campus parking, go to B-1 Level of the Central Campus Garage beneath McNair Hall in the Jones School.

• Bring your ID card to Abercrombie B205 to request activation for after-hours and weekend access to Duncan, Abercrombie or Space Science buildings.

• Apply online for your Rice email account at http://apply.rice.edu/.

• PhD students obtain office/lab key(s) from Michael Dye (x6317) in Abercrombie A146 (adjacent to Duncan Hall).

• See Victoria Zellefrow (AL A204) for a copier code.  Your code will access the Oce copiers in both Duncan and Abercrombie.

• All ECE grad student mail boxes are located in Abercrombie A232.
