The New Senior Design Program in Electrical & Computer Engineering at Rice

Gary L. Woods
Professor in the Practice

In the electrical and computer engineering department, Senior Design is a yearlong “capstone” course in which teams of students tackle significant design problems. The main goals of the Senior Design program are to provide students (1) an opportunity to apply much of their hard-earned knowledge in one large design project; (2) the opportunity to interact with integrated, often multi-disciplinary teams; and (3) a preview of “real-world” employment. This year, the ECE department has initiated significant changes to the design curriculum, including a new management structure for senior design projects; project-management training moved into the junior year; cross-departmental projects; and the introduction of industry-sponsored projects via the corporate affiliates program. This talk will describe the new Senior Design program and how it will be more tightly integrated with the affiliates program.
