Practical needs for Future Image and Video Coding Algorithms

The JPEG2000 image coding standard offers several advantages in comparison to JPEG, while the recently completed H.264 video coding standard offers a huge advantage over previous standards by halving the number of bits needed to store or transmit video data. Here we will discuss practical issues facing adoption of those technologies, extrapolate lessons learned that suggest needs for new image and video coding standards, and outline related challenges for research.
