Behind the Scenes: Technical Challenges and
Observations From the Visual Effects Industry

Moviemaking is a very high-tech operation these days. The talk will explain some of the technologies used in "post production", which is everything that happens after the actual filming. It will cover the techniques and hardware that fill empty stadiums with people, allow mice to talk, and robots to fly, all to allow a director to tell a story. You will also hear what it's really like to work in the "glamorous movie business".

* Biography:

Dr. Hall is currently a Senior Technical Director at Sony Pictures Imageworks, where he's worked in visual effects for 9 years. He uses computer graphics to add elements to live action photography. Projects have included Polar Express, Peter Pan, Matrix Revolutions, Matrix Reloaded, Anger Management, Harry Potter, Hollow Man, Stuart Little, and Starship Troopers. Prior to Sony he worked at Walt Disney Feature Animation, on Dinosaur, Fantasia 2000, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He previously worked at Sun Microsystems and Texas Instruments.

Dr. Hall spent an awful lot of time at Rice, getting the following degrees: BSEE (81), MEE (82), MSCS (90), PhD (92).
