Professor Ashutosh Sabharwal named organizer of Microsoft Research Summit

Ashutosh Sabharwal, director of the Center for Multimedia Communication (CMC), will co-organize the annual Microsoft Research Summit, June 5-6, 2008. Themed "Cognitive Wireless Networking”, the workshop will bring together experts from academia and industry for two days of intensive brainstorming on cognitive wireless networks.

Successes with WARP credited for appointment

Sabharwal’s recent research at the CMC on wireless networks, and his lead role in Wireless Open-Access Research Project (WARP) can be attributed for the special invitation. WARP, is an open-source project, which has already been adopted by 9 universities and 6 companies worldwide in the first year of its distribution.

CMC researchers, led by Sabharwal, have conducted several WARP workshops in US, Taiwan, India and the latest in Egypt at Nile University (April 15-16, 2008). Faculty, students and corporate researchers attended it.

Nile University, currently specializes in only graduate education and research, and will add an undergraduate program in 2009. The NU wireless lab is being modeled after Rice University's CMC Lab. Furthermore, NU wireless lab will use WARP kits, which were designed, developed and produced by Rice University.

WARP is not only being used for diverse research activities (e.g. cognitive radios, mesh networking, MIMO, cooperative communications) but also for undergraduate and graduate education.
