Alum Mark Dankberg (Rice BSEE '76, MEE '77) wins 2013 Arthur C. Clark Innovator Award (October 2013) 

Mark was a cofounder of ViaSat, and is currently its president and CEO. In 2011 ViaSat launched a communications satellite that holds the Guinness record for the world's highest capacity communications satellite with a total capacity in excess of 140 Gbit/s, more than all the satellites covering North America combined, when it launched.” Pretty impressive stuff! Mark got his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from Rice.
