Gao Wins Prestigious Scholarship

Congratulations to ECE postdoctoral researcher Weilu Gao on winning a Chinese National Scholarship for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad. The prestigious award is only granted to 500 individuals out of the half million Chinese students studying abroad.

2017.05.Gao.ScholarshipStarted in 2003, the award is presented annually by the Chinese government to Chinese students in 32 countries. 18 Houston-area students were honored at the ceremony, held at the Chinese Consulate on Saturday, May 6, with Professor James Tour addressing the attendees. Gao was presented with the award by Zhao Yumin, deputy consul general from the consulate-general of China in Houston.

Gao received his Ph.D. from Rice in 2016. He is continuing his work under his Ph.D. Advisor Dr. Jun Kono doing carbon nanotube research.

“During the research I did for my Ph.D., we discovered a completely new method to align nanotubes,” he explained. “I am continuing this work as a postdoc, investigating the fundamental optical properties of aligned nanotubes in a photonic cavity. We are also interested in figuring out how to use this material for different applications.”

Gao is grateful for the collaborative opportunities provided by Rice. “Through my Ph.D. work, the lab developed a new method to fabricate nanostructures, and it has been useful for nanotube communities and materials scientists all over the world,” he said.
