Heather Johnston Receives Schlumberger
Scholarship
Heather Johnston, Junior, has received a Sclumberger Scholarship for
the 2005-06 academic year. Johnston is pursuing a specialization in
signals (control, communication, and signal processing) and has
interest in microeconomics. An Elec 241 assistant, she interned the
past two summers with Motorola's mobile devices division.
Gareth Middleton and Daniel Wu win Rice Engineering
Alumni (REA) Awards
Gareth Middleton, Senior, and Daniel Wu, Junior, have received
$1,000 awards from the Rice Engineering Alumni Association. Each
year, senior and junior engineering students independently compete for
merit awards offered by the REA. To enter the competition, students
must complete an application that includes a 300-word essay. The
student's written essay, campus activities, honors and awards and
cumulative GPA are judged by the REA Awards Committee.
Brian Johnston wins the Best Senior Project in Electrical
and Computer Engineering Award
Brian Johnston received a $250 award for The Best Senior Project in
ECE. Nominations were submitted by faculty, and the chairman of the
department.
Venkat Chandrasekaran wins James S. Waters Award for
Creativity
Venkat Chandrasekaran, ECE senior, has won $1,000 for his creative
research in Optimal Surflet-based Algorithms for Compression of
High-dimensional Data. The James S. Waters Creativity Award is awarded
annually to an engineering undergraduate in recognition of unusual
creativity in independent work. Engineering departments are asked to
submit nominations for the award and a committee of chairs or
representatives from each of the engineering departments selects a
recipient. This year, there were four nominations and the committee
selected two awards (one in BIOE, one in ECE).
