Dipankar Sarkar

AREAS OF INTEREST:

  • Scanning Tunneling Microscopy
  • Electromagnetic Theory

RESEARCH:

Dipankar Sarkar culminated his graduate career at Rice by switching from experimental science to theory. His PhD thesis "A vector basis function solution of Maxwell's equations" represents a novel solution to the classic Mie scattering problem where the size of the scattering object is on the same order as the wavelength of light. Field intensity plots that would have taken supercomputers weeks were reduced to minutes and this allowed the over-night production of movies showing the time evolution of fields for growing nanoscale particles.

CURRENT WHEREABOUTS:

Dip has since moved back to India where he is pursuing his love of teaching and is starting a Scanning Probe Microscopy company.
