- Prof. Junichiro Kono has been named a 2009 American Physical Society Fellow for "Contributions to optical processes in semiconductor nanostructures, including magneto-optical studies of Aharonov-Bohm physics in carbon nanotubes.” This award will be presented at the APS March Meeting 2010 and will be published in the March 2010 issues of APS News and on the APS Fellowship website.

- The Kono Group will welcome four visiting graduate research interns from the Hokkaido University CEED Program in the Fall of 2009 for stays ranging from two to six months. The Kono Group welcomes Takahiro Kinoshita, Takayuki Nosaka, Kenji Yamamoto, and Tomoyuki Taira to Rice University!

- Thomas Searles is awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Grant. He will participate in the NSF IGERT Training Program in Nanophotonics for two years!

- The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering congratulates Professor Junichiro Kono on becoming a full professor! Jun came to Rice University in 2000 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and rose to Associate Professor in 2005 , and in 2009 he received a joint appointment in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. - Thomas Searles was presented the SPIE Student Poster Award - First Place, by The National Society of Black Physicists for Polarization-Dependent Magneto-Absorption Spectroscopy of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes, at the 2009 Joint Annual Conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. - Kono Group Undergraduate Researcher Benjamin Lu is listed as a second author on a manuscript that includes portions of the work he did with former Kono Group Post-Doctoral Researcher Yoichi Murakami at the University of Tokyo. Ben conducted this research as a participant in the NanoJapan 2008 program which is funded by an NSF-PIRE grant (OISE-0530220). ( Abstract & Download Full Text).
