This talk provides an overview of the history and state-of-the-art in compression of digital imagery, using simple models to show why and how quantization, JPEG, and wavelet image coding work. Examining the models more closely, the talk suggests that there are yet more significant improvements that can be made, and points to promising new directions in image coding.
