Concept Statement (491 Groups only)
To make sure that everyone involved agrees on what your
project is, you will prepare a brief but complete
statement describing what you intend to do.
This proposal must be approved by the design instructors and
the faculty sponsor before the project may proceed.

This proposal must be approved before
you can register for 491,
so you should plan to complete it before the end of
your Junior year.
Note that approval is not automatic and that several iterations
may be required, so plan accordingly.
- Purpose:

Define the intended focus and scope of your project.
Insure that the proposed project is appropriate to the
cirteria of the course.
- Audience:

Course instructors and faculty sponsor.
- Length:

Two or three pages should be adequate.
- Content:

Be sure to include:
- Motivation for the design.

Why is this project worth doing?
Why do
you
want to pursue it?
- Major goals of the design.

List and describe the needs or requirements that will drive the design.
Distinguish between essential and optional goals or features.
- Primary constraints on the design.

List the constraints that you can identify at this time:
technical, economic (including competition), alternative approaches,
safety, manufacturability, etc.
- Special project needs or capabilities.

If applicable, identify special tools, instruments, facilities,
software, or travel needed for this project. Also identify any
special resources available, industry contacts, donations, etc.
- Project team members.
